ICT Group renovates automation systems at Haarlem water treatment facility

Our ICT Group participation is helping to realise the large-scale renovation of the Haarlem Waarderpolder water treatment facility. The ICT Group is developing an advanced control system for this project that not only manages the new water treatment installations but also ensures that the water treatment system that is presently in operation can continue to operate as normal during the lengthy period of renovation and new construction. This makes the project especially challenging, as the existing system and the new components will have to temporarily operate smoothly side-by-side.

The outdated treatment facility in Haarlem is being thoroughly renovated in order to comply with new water quality standards and to keep pace with the increase in the number of residents and businesses in the region. With a capacity of 9000 m³ of waste water per hour, the renovated installation will soon be able to process the waste water from 296,000 households and businesses. In addition, the water treatment facility will process sewage sludge from other locations in order to produce energy-rich biogas. The ICT Group will play a crucial role in the design and implementation of the process automation systems that make this complex overall operation possible.

During the project, the ICT Group will ensure that the existing as well as new systems can continue to operate smoothly side-by-side. Thanks to intelligent ICT solutions, the installation will be able to proactively respond to variations in water flow, such as those caused by heavy rainfall. In addition, standard building modules will be developed that can also be used at other locations of the Rijnland Hoogheemraadschap (Higher Water Board).
