In 2020, Rooftop Energy and the Gelderse Vallei Hospital in Ede, the Netherlands, will be building a roof structure on the upper deck of the hospital's parking garage, on which a total of 5,100 solar panels will be mounted. In opting for renewable energy, the hospital will be generating approximately 18% of its required electrical capacity. At 1,800,000 kWh, the annual energy generated is equal to the consumption of more than 500 homes.
The Gelderse Vallei Hospital has been investing in sustainability for some time, including by purchasing 100% green energy and using thermal energy storage to regulate hospital temperatures. The hospital also features a 'green' roof to keep the building cool in the summer. The glass used for renovations has strong insulation properties and is combined with the use of LED lights. The flags outside the building are made from recyclable materials.
Arjen Hakbijl, member of the hospital board: “We are pleased with the opportunity to improve our sustainability practices, as this is consistent with our sense of social responsibility. In installing these solar panels, we are taking a step in the right direction.”
Leendert Florusse, CEO of Rooftop Energy: “We are delighted that our full-service concept will help the hospital to achieve its sustainability goals and will contribute to increasing safety and comfort in the parking facility.”
